Magnificent Large Antique Georgian Regency Period Black Dot Paste Turban Brooch

About the Item

Superb antique Georgian Regency period black dot paste and silver turban ornament brooch. Circa 1810 The hand cut, hand polished stones set in a substantial silver setting of fine, generous proportions fit for a Maharaja. Pieces of this stature and design would only have been created for an aristocratic, wealthy individual. Quality of the metalwork indicates that this piece was of French or Portugese origin. Turban ornaments were worn by Mughal emperors and Indian rulers as a sign of their rank and to showcase large gemstones. On rare occasions, they would be presented to favored princes or courtiers as a sign of special appreciation. In the early 20th century, a number of important turban ornaments were mounted by Cartier such as the famed Maharaja of Nawanagar Eye of the Tiger which featured a 61.5 carat whiskey colored diamond. The Regency period welcomed an era of fascination with eastern exoticism as evidenced with the building of the Royal Brighton Pavillion and the introduction of Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern design elements in decorative arts, fashion and jewelry. This fabulous brooch dates to this period of exuberant luxury which is enjoying a current renaissance in popular culture via shows such as Netflix's Bridgerton and magnificent traditional Indian wedding ceremonies showcased on Instagram. The design centers a large cushion cut stone framed by a double border of circular stones topped by an elegant floral element with graduated stylized palm fronds on both sides. Beautiful 200 year old patina to the silver, all original hand cut stones are intact. Width: 2.75 inches Height: 2.63 inches
