Pair Japan Shakudo Sea Dragon Samurai Warrior Lily Pad Brooches Gold Victorian

About the Item

This is a very rare pair of Antique Victorian Shakudo Brooch Pins from Japan depicting a Samurai Warrior holding a Sea Dragon swimming through Lily Pads. The extraordinary imagery is full of history, drama and mystique. The dragons are wonderful, the samurai warriors fantastic and I just love the lily pad imagery they are swimming through. The brooches are pieces of the historic Japanese art form of Shakudo which are made of mixed metals including 14 Karat Gold and Silver. The Shakudo pieces originated in the Samurai period in Japan and were created by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to converting the pieces to wearable art during the period of the 1870s - 1900. Here we have a very rare pair of Shakudo brooches. Notice the grace of the proportion of the images and the Japanese esthetic of asymmetry. The mixed metals Shakudo plaque is set on a silver back. The Shakudo brooches measure 1 3/4 inches (45mm) long and 11/16 inch (17 mm) tall. Together they weigh 18.3 grams.
