Victorian Coral Cameo Brooch
About the Item
Very unusual Victorian 14kt. Gold Brooch with 2 cameos. The upper portion has taille d’epargné, engraving filled in with black enamel. The cameo on the upper piece is a high relief woman's face carved from Coral. The smaller cameo on the hinged lower portion appears to be a child's face carved from Sardonyx. Mother and child perhaps?
This unusual 2-part brooch was probably created in the last half of the 19th century. There is a tiny hole in the top of the Coral cameo in the front of the hair. It's possible it was hanging as a pendant before it was incorporated in the brooch. Engraved on the edge of the top portion is the Roman numeral "VII." Possible meaning? Perhaps it was made during King Edward the seventh's reign.
