Antique Victorian Carved Coral Cameo and Gold Brooch
About the Item
A beautiful 14 karat yellow gold hand-carved in high relief coral brooch set with a cameo in the center. The large coral beads on the edge are faceted and have a gold cap at the top and attached to the brooch. The beautifully carved oval cameo shows a portrait of a woman with flowers in her hair. The woman is framed by a border with gold leaf motifs and these faceted red coral beads.
Cameo jewelry was especially popular in the second half of the 19th century. Almost every woman in society owned a carved piece of jewelry, mainly with mythological motifs from ancient times. The great figures from history were loved and many philosophers and emperors, as well as goddesses and gods, can be found on the rings and brooches of this generation.
The provenance of this brooch is from a Swedish family and the beautiful jewel dates back to the 19th century.
The weight of the brooch is 11.8 grams and the size is 35 millimeters in diameter or 3.5 x 3.5 centimeters.
