About the Item

The snake has been a powerful image since the Victorian era and continues to be popular even in modern jewelry. It has been an inspiration for jewelry design for ages, often used to symbolize eternity, everlasting love, life and protection. This magnificent snake pin is an outstanding example of Victorian Revival jewelry from the early Retro (ca1930s) era! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, the pin is very large in size and depicts a decorative snake dangling a luscious apple from its jaws. The snake's tail intertwines to form an open knot, and an engraved pattern on its body emulates individual serpent scales. Bright green enamel covers its head, with a fine Guilloché pattern visible below. A sparkling mine cut diamond (weighing approximately .25ct) rests in silver prongs at the center of the head. Two brilliant rubies (approximately .03pt each) are bezel set in 14kt yellow gold, representing its eyes. The snake wears a silver collar lined with five rose cut diamonds (weighing approximately weight 0.5ct each). Jagged gold teeth line the snake's open jaws, which grip the silver stem of a beautiful red enameled apple, which swings freely. Delicate rose cut diamonds (approximately 2pts) line the leaves, twinkling beautifully in the light. The paired imagery of a snake with a tempting apple suggests a reference to the story of the Garden of Eden, though this is open to the wearer's interpretation. Three small hallmarks are stamped beneath the snake's head, and a large bar pin and clasp rest on the back of the piece, perfect for fastening to a favorite garment. If desired, it can easily be converted in to a pendant and worn on a chain. This grand brooch is a true work of art, and makes a bold statement that would delight any collector! The pin measures approximately 3 1/8" at the widest point, 2 3/4" at the tallest point and is approximately 3/4" thick. The snake head measures approximately 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" tall. The apple measures approximately 3/8" in size.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the enamel is excellent, however there are two very small and unnoticeable chips on the snake's neck near the diamond collar. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
