Victorian Gold Hairwork Girandole Earrings
About the Item
This jewelry and hairwork was valued in France and in England. Dark hair came from the continent. Light hair from was often from Prussia. The weaving was considered worthy to teach to young ladies in school. For learning purposes, horse hair was used. Those skilled at hairwork used human hair. Skilled ladies could and did include hair in landscape portraits that were placed in rings and in brooches, for example in the leaves of the weeping willow. Margaret Flower's book "Victorian
Jewelry" documents a large portrait, full length and life sized, of Queen Victoria made completely of hair. This "tour de force" as she calls it was exhibited in the Paris Exposition of 1855. c.1850-60
