About the Item

Sculptural earrings designed by Tom Odell. Fabulous sculptural earrings created in Chattan Massachusett by the studio jewelry artist Tom Odell. This three dimensional geometric earrings has been made with several overlapping elements crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with hammered textured surfaces and high polished finishes. Fitted with posts for pierced ears and French omega backs for fastening clips. Gemstones: Mounted in bezels, with a pair of trapeze cut (18 x 8 x 5 mm) of natural Australian boulder opals with a weight of 8.20 carats. Birthstone: Opal for the month of October. Weight: 16.45 Grams, (10.54 Dwt). Measurements: 26 mm by 29 mm by 9 mm (1.03 x 1.14 x 0.35 Inches). Hallmarks: They are both stamped with the maker's monogram mark, the gold assay mark and signed, "ODELL 18KT". Tom Odell is an American goldsmith artist based in Chattan Massachusett. His work as a metal artist has evolved over thirty years from apprentice jeweler to goldsmith jewelry designer, silversmith, maker of hollowware, utensils and sculpture. His current work in jewelry falls into two major categories. The first is done exclusively in precious metals & often set with gemstones. The second is work fabricated with many different metals and traditional Japanese alloys to obtain various color values in compositions, and is often patined to obtain a greater range of color. The colors of the various metals and stones, along with the shape, texture, surface treatment and reflective qualities are the elements used to develop his compositions. In 1973 after a four year association with jeweler Bemard Kelly, Tom Odell joined Carol Odell to establish joint studios and showrooms for his metalwork and her fine art painting and printmaking in Orleans, MA. In 1975 they opened expanded studios and gallery space in what is still their home in Chatham, MA. After returning from a year working in Kyoto, Japan in 1987 the focus switched to making and exhibiting more one of a kind pieces in selected galleries and group shows as well as at their own gallery in Chatham. The range of work includes two distinct types of jewelry in both precious metals and specialty Japanese alloys which are treated with traditional patinas, hollowware, utensils and sculpture which are are both fabricated and cast. The sculptural, three dimensional aspects of all the work are my main concerns. I consider my work as both art and craft as these are just different aspects of the same unifying quality of any truly complete piece of work. Art is the idea or concept, craft is the application of technical facilities to achieve those effects. Note: The opal, is gem quality, translucent with a perfect oval cut and a phenomenal play of multi colors. These kind of Opals have a reputation for being one of the most expensive opals in the world. Note: Precious Opal like this are rare, opalescence refers to the optical phenomena displayed by the mineraloid gemstone opal (hydrated silicon dioxide). However, there are three notable types of opal (precious, common, and fire), each with different optical effects, so the intended meaning varies depending on context. The optical effects seen in various types of opal are a result of refraction (precious and fire) or reflection (common) due to the layering, spacing, and size of the myriad microscopic silicon dioxide spheres and included water (or air) in its physical structure. When the size and spacing of the silica spheres are relatively small, refracted blue-green colors are prevalent; when relatively larger, refracted yellow-orange-red colors are seen; and when larger yet, reflection yields a milky-hazy sheen. Collateral: They are accompanied by a presentation jewelry box. Condition: The overall condition of this ring is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold.
