Wendy Ramshaw Pair of Amethyst, Wedgwood Ceramic and 18K Gold Earrings, 1994

About the Item

A pair of amethyst, Wedgwood ceramic, and 18 karat gold earrings, by Wendy Ramshaw, UK, 1994. Wedgwood Series. Stamped WR, 750, British hallmarks. These earrings epitomize the late eminent British artist jeweler Wendy Ramshaw's career-long fixation on the circle. The earrings offer us an 18-karat gold bezel setting for deep-hued amethysts centered on round Wedgwood ceramic elements, thereby mixing precious with non-precious materials, creating sophisticated and wearable art. With every sway and movement, these British modern earrings come alive. They represent a great opportunity to invest in Wendy Ramshaw jewelry. Wendy Ramshaw was one of Britain's most important artist- jewelers - both a sculptor and jeweler. Born in 1939, she got her first degree in illustration and textile design. Ramshaw always saw jewelry as a creative outlet for her ideas. Her earliest pieces, made of paper, were sold by the fashion designer Mary Quant at London Bazaar, in the 1960s. Ramshaw then went back to school and studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London. In the 1970s, she took on a commission that changed her approach to jewelry. Asked to make a ring featuring one large moonstone, the commission led to the design of her groundbreaking, clustered, stacking rings (never worn by women popularly before) on equally beautiful turned pillars. Each piece is an original - together they announced the idea that jewelry can be displayed and appreciated as sculpture when not worn on the body. Ramshaw designed on both small and large scales,` turning later to public art commissions such as large Gates to London's Hyde Park. In 2003, Ramshaw was awarded an OBE for her services to the arts, as well as the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Her work may be seen in The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Schmuckmuseum in Pforzheim, the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, among numerous others.
