Early 1900's Tibet Silver Tangka Coin 18K Gold Wire Earrings
About the Item
Two silver "Tangka" coins from Tibet 1912-22 display the eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism: umbrella of sovereignty, two golden fish of good fortune, amphora of ambrosia, lotus, conch shell, emblem of endless rebirth, banner of victory, and wheel of empire. All are arrayed around a central lotus motif. Varieties of these coins were struck from 1791 - 1948. The coins are set within a Steven Battelle designed 18K gold twist wire bezel and similar round component attached to safety clasp ear wires. Although large, (the coins are 26 mm) the earrings are too heavy, at 7.2 grams each. These come with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
