Japanese 1800's Silver Samurai Coin Ethiopian Opal 18K Gold Earrings
About the Item
Two interesting authentic rectangular silver coins from the last Japanese shogunate, minted in the waning days of their power 1837-1854, are set in matte-finish 18K bezels below 4 mm cabochon Ethiopian opal accents. The coins are "Kaei Isshugin" translated as "1 Shu Silver" and were the pocket change of the Samurai warriors. The last shogun was overthrown in 1869, and power was returned to the emperor. After that, modern minting equipment was imported and round modern style coins were minted. These earrings hang below 18K safety-clasp wires and are sent with a lifetime laminated coin certificate of authenticity. Historic...

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
