About the Item
A Victorian cameo and gold suite by Joseph Mayer, the brooch set to the centre with an oval cameo measuring approximately 32 x 24 mm, the earrings each set with a cameo measuring approximately 19 x 14 mm, suspended to a domed top with sheperd's hook fitting and spear-shaped drops, the cameos all set to the centre of a beaded and pear-shaped scroll-designed oval frame, accompanied by original fitted case by Joseph Mayer, circa 1860, the brooch measuring approximately 4.6x3.7cm, the earrings measuring approximately 5.7x2.1cm, gross weight 28 grams.
An exquisite cameo suite by Joseph Mayer. Mayer was a nineteenth century antiquities collector and goldsmith, who collected and drew inspiration from antiquities. This set exemplifies Mayer’s passion for neoclassical imagery, featuring a wonderful brooch with a cameo depicting Diana and Cupid. Diana is recognizable from the bow she carries, which Cupid also reaches towards. The earrings feature a further goddess, depicted in profile leaning against a plinth. The cameos are fine white on pink stone, framed by Roman-style gold borders and decoration. This neoclassical set comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
