A pair of Georgian large paste drop earrings

About the Item

A pair of Georgian large paste drop earrings, each earring with a large cushion-cut colourless faceted paste suspended by a smaller one, all set in silver cut-down collets with yellow gold back and gold wire fittings, circa 1820, measuring approximately 1.8 x 1cm, gross weight 4.9 grams. This antique pair of earrings is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as silver and 15ct gold. A classic pair of Georgian paste drop earrings. These earrings offer a wonderful glimpse into Georgian history. In 1780, paste was introduced as a gemstone alternative and became highly important in Georgian jewellery. Wearing paste as opposed to diamonds added security whilst travelling, because doing so with jewellery was notoriously risky at the time. Working with paste became an art form in its own right, and pieces often exhibited a unique expression of design and craftsmanship. These earrings from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, would suit a brightly coloured blouse or cardigan. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.

  • Exceptional Georgian Paste Earrings, ex. Lillian Gish
    Located in New York, NY
Amazing Georgian paste earrings in the most extraordinary shade of lime green from the early 19th Century. Set in a scalloped 14k gold setting around each stone. Georgian earrings of this quality, scale and color are so incredibly rare. The faceting is exquisite. This pair unfortunately is not perfect. There is a little sliver of glass missing from the top point edge of one of the ear pendants. It is not very noticeable when worn but is visible when closely examined. There is also a chip on oval stone of same earring. The surreal color of the lime green glass paste probably has much to do with the minerals used its manufacture. These are minerals which are obviously no longer used so this color is not replicable. The original fittings have been changed to clips later on. In addition, these come from the collection of actress Lillian Gish...
