GIA Emerald Cameo 20.10ct Ural Mountains Origin
About the Item
It is quite rare to find an emerald cameo that is this large a size.
The motif of the woman with flowing hair is possibly a Gorgon as in Medusa. The weight of this Mid-19th Century cameo is 20.10 carats.
The shape is asymmetrical and not a perfect oval. The reason for this shape is that more that 170 years ago, the cutter that worked on this rare cameo, used the original shape of the rough emerald crystal.
The white matrix seen on the back is from the host mineral while forming deep inside the Earth for millions of years. . The cameo has a great “spread” and looks a lot larger than its weight.The depth percentage is 35.6%, having most of the weight on the surface, rather than depth as in most traditional cut emeralds. The accompanying GIA report states that the origin is the Ural Mountains. The date of mining and most probably the cutting is circa 1830-1850. The GIA report also states that the enhancement is F1, which is minor.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. The nose is worn due the age and wear of this cameo. There is a natural occurring fissure to the right eye that has always been there , even before it was cut into a cameo.
