Victorian Shakudo Mixed Metals Watch Chain with Carnelian Fob

About the Item

Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate them into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual. A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. This highly unusual watch chain from the Victorian era (ca1880) is an outstanding example of the Shakudo craft! The piece consists of a carnelian fob that hangs from a mixed metals Shakudo chain. Each chain link is double-sided and has a lovely floral shape. The rich combination of mixed metals colors includes shades of gold, bronze, silver, and gunmetal, creating a wonderful alternating pattern! Two strands of chain meet at a sterling watch swivel clasp at one end, perfect for hanging a complimentary pocket watch or locket. At the other end of the chain is an oxidized cap, which divides the chain in two. A toggle bar and the carnelian fob dangle from each extension. Surrounding the carnelian fob is a decorative twisted rope border and filigree surmount. The profile of a Roman soldier's face is carved into the surface of the rich carnelian stone, creating a wonderful intaglio image. This unique Victorian piece is simply exceptional, and would make a perfect addition to any Shakudo collection! The chain measures approximately 13" long, from the toggle bar at one end to the watch swivel clasp at the other. The carnelian fob hangs 4" long from its chain extension, and is 1 1/4" tall and wide.

Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the piece is very excellent. Besides normal surface wear. there is no apparent damage to the mixed metals links, toggle, or watch swivel clasp. The carnelian fob is secure and free of chips.
