About the Item

This superlative Mid-Century Mediterranean coral necklace from Naples is the epitome of "classic" style. Each of the 78 rich red beads was carved by hand and has the waxy gleam of fresh lipstick. The beads measure approximately 7mm and several display minor surface irregularities and pits that we expect (and cherish) in a natural coral necklace. The 24" necklace closes with an 18K yellow gold clasp that is bezel-set with a 9mm x 6mm oval cabochon of matching red coral. The clasp works flawlessly and there is an additional safety catch that clicks into position. We shall never know the identity of the person who first purchased this necklace but we do know she had excellent taste. A 24" necklace elongates the neck and is therefore arguably the most flattering necklace length. She could have selected larger beads: larger but not finer. And larger isn't always better. Much larger than 7mm and you end up with a great mass of deep siren red circling your neck. To me, this is the ideal coral necklace which is why I bought it. This necklace was created in the 1960s or 1970s and is in beautiful vintage condition. It has been recently restrung on fresh silk and knotted between each bead, so there is no reason this necklace can't be enjoyed by the next generation and the generation after. This is a very high-quality piece that has been well cared for. The deepest and most richly saturated Mediterranean coral is found in the shallow waters of the Mediterranean; a mere 100-150 feet below the surface. It is this area that has become largely depleted of coral from over-harvesting. So the coral today must be found at greater depths and this means lighter-colored coral. This is why rich red coral as you see here is, indeed, a rare and precious thing. The tongue of the clasp is marked "750" for 18K gold and "271 NA" which would identify the maker and the origin of creation, Naples. 78 Coral Necklace
