The necklace of straight 9mm CHINESE fresh water pearls is remarkably beautiful. Many people do not understand the difference between Chinese and Japanese cultured pearls, so this is the story. Japanese cultured pearls, the ones that your grandmother used to own are grown in a controlled medium in Japan. The oyster is impregnated with a perfectly round seed and then grown in ocean water for about 5 years. The pearls used to be 7 years, which made them much better coated and have more luster. However, during the pearl craze, this was no longer possible. What actually happens, is that the seed that is inserted into the oyster irritates the oyster (like when you have something in your eye) and the oyster starts to coat the seed with layers of secretion. As the seed is perfectly round, the pearls are formed round and the longer that they stay in the oyster, the better the coating. About 12 years ago, the Chinese started producing cultured pearls, but these were grown in lake water and controlled like the Japanese ones. However, they did not use the perfectly round seed, but rather cut a small piece of the oyster to insert. This created some of the different shapes that are found in the market place. So the difference in the water and process created a pearl that had less coating, was not perfectly round, and usually was pulled too early. Most of the Chinese pearls lack in luster and brilliance and so our job is to find and match the pearls that are similar in color, size, luster, and roundness to create a necklace. Forcing us to use many strands to create one necklace that we are pleased with. The necklace illustrated below in the pictures is basically straight 9mm pearls, they have much better than average luster, they are basically more round because that is what we matched, and when worn appear to be genuine Japanese quality pearls, although they are Chinese. The necklace is strung on silk thread and knotted between each pearl. This necklace has a MAGNETIC CLASP. When operating a magnetic clasp, take hold of the two rings on either side of the clasp and gently pull apart. It is easy to pull apart with basically no effort. Try not to pull using the pearls, it will stretch the silk and force you to restring the necklace sooner, as the pearls will begin to move between the knots.
