About the Item
These are NOT a "modest wardrobe staple" easily overlooked and neither adding to nor subtracting from any given outfit.
These are the show-offy, evening-ready, super-white, super-lustrous Akoya pearls that pearl lovers go crazy for.
They're from our trusted and cherished pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Sea Pearls with offices in Los Angeles, Germany and Tokyo. George is a saltwater pearl authority -- a specialist in an area with very few actual specialists, and he comes from a family of pearl dealers. He deals only in saltwater pearls (Japanese, Australian and Tahitian), so we always know we're getting the real thing. He also makes his own strands, buying thousands of loose pearls and assembling strands by hand, looking for pearls that complement each other with an uncanny eye for color, luster and overall quality.
The pearls in this necklace are the best quality Akoyas we've ever bought from George and they're definitely next-level. They boast top luster, thick nacre, near-round to round shape and frosty white body color. "A string of lightbulbs," as George likes to say.
Strung on white silk with full knots (of course). The closure is one of our vintage 14 karat gold clasps -- a pretty pearl flower with a diamond center and four white gold leaves set with more diamonds. The 5 tiny diamonds are all natural (this clasp predates lab diamonds) single cuts, fairly clean, and total no more than 0.025 carats in weight. The clasp has a figure 8 safety catch.
This necklace is 18.5" long and weighs 36 grams.

The necklace was purchased in the United Kingdom but bears no hallmarks. It's very well-made and remains on its original silk, which still appears sturdy. I believe the necklace dates to the 1980s. Cultured Akoya pearls over 8mm in diameter are the most coveted of all Akoya pearls because fine ones are difficult to achieve. The longer a pearl remains inside the oyster the thicker the nacre and larger it grows but the greater the opportunity for any number of variables to come along and spoil the pearl. These large 9-9.4mm pearls are luminous and stunning: they are creamy-white with a soft pink overtone. The pearls possess a nice, sharp shine. Is there any single piece of jewelry more classic, more iconic and more always-in-style than a strand (or two or three or four) of pearls?
