About the Item

The 2-1/2” x 2” Naja with 45 multi-color stones is on a 18” necklace with 8 squash blossoms. Each squash blossom has 11 multi-color stones. Consisting of spiny oyster, mother of pearl, turquoise. Hallmarked with her “LW” Native American squash blossom necklaces are some of the best known Indian jewelry and are worn by both men and women. The Naja symbol - the impressive centrepiece of the squash blossom design - is said to have originated in the Middle East, where the Moors brought horseshoe shaped jewelry with them as a ward against the evil eye into Spain. From here, the Spanish conquistadors brought the symbol to the Navajo, who adopted it. Squash Blossom Necklaces were worn with pride and reverence for their beauty and inherent value by both men and women. About the artist: Lorraine began jewelry making in the 1970's. She learned her trade by watching and helping her parents Alice and Duane Quam and grandparents Doris and Wayne Ondelacy. Her skills as a stone cutter and her husband Luwayne's skills as a silversmith combined are those of past masters. Their cluster Zuni jewelry is very collectable, as each piece is done with amazing precision. Her use of high-quality materials, both in the turquoise and coral she chooses for her pieces, are also a hallmark of her beautiful work.

Sterling Silver Handmade Vintage Bisbee Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
Located in Scottsdale, AZ
An astonishing seventeen perfectly matched natural Bisbee turquoise cabochons were used to create this super rare squash blossom necklace. Today, due to the scarcity of the turquoise the necklace would not be able to be made. Each of the large specimens is the signature look of the lavender pit of the mine, deep Bisbee blue with reddish brown and purple matrix. The quality of the silver work is a great testament to the rarity and beauty of the stone. It is strung with beautiful handmade silver beads and is very wearable. Bisbee mine turquoise was one of the first to appear for sale on the modern American market, which is at least partly responsible for its fame. The turquoise mine was a secondary operation to the Bisbee copper mine, operated by the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The vast majority of Bisbee turquoise surfaced when the Phelps Dodge started their open pit...
