An 18 Carat Gold Antique Watch Chain
About the Item
An 18 carat yellow gold watch chain with a swivel clasp and a very richly decorated gold sliding bead and a hand holding a clasp. The central slide is decorated with shells. One hand holds the rotating clasp that can be screwed up to open. The lock has the double action opening which means that the ring above the lock must be unscrewed to free the arm of the lock so that it can be opened, France, circa 1850.

Wearing long watch chains became popular among women around 1820. The chain is often called a watch, guard, muffor or lorgnette chain, the name referring more to the use than to the construction of the chain. In the beginning, ladies hung pens and keys on these chains, but over the years the pen was replaced by a watch. Many of the chains from that time were very long but the ones like this one are often divided into two chains. Many of the chains have a slider with which the chains can be made longer or shorter according to the wishes of wearer.
