About the Item
All featuring white cat's eyes, 21 gray 3mm ball-cut moonstones are beaded on this antique symmetrical choker necklace between stations of shiny 14-karat gold-filled tubes that are bracketed by gold ball spacers. Resembling modern minimal Cartier tube-link designs, the Victorian-period necklace has a delicate extension chain that ends in a gold ball and that fastens with a spring-ring clap, which is stamped "1/20 14KGF". It could date as early as 1876 when the Arts & Crafts movement spread to the United States, whereafter throughout the Art Nouveau period moonstones were popular in choker necklaces until WWI.
The polished moonstones look like pearls until their adularescence of diffused light from within provokes a closer look at the sharply-defined glowing vertical slits of white sheen caused by the phenomenon of chatoyancy. This gold-beaded necklace is ideal for eye-catching everyday jewelry that contributes to defining one's style.
The cat's-eye moonstone is uniquely valued for its magical optical effect that has been associated with reflective white moon-beams on bodies of water and belief in spirits that appear as such luminous entities.
