About the Item
Victorian Belle-Epoque and Edwardian fine jewelry transitioned to Art-Deco period costume jewelry with semi-precious materials and machine-age shapes around WWI when this unique openwork 20-link choker necklace was made in only white gold instead of gems set in platinum with delicate filigree. It fastens with an adjustable bi-textural extender chain and spring-ring clasp. The French-style curvilinear shapes and chain-ball, combined with the rectangular and tiny square links, give the impression that the goldsmith was inspired by possibly unattainable foreign round pearls and cut diamonds.
While unsigned, the clasp is stamped "1/20 12k G.F.". Low-carat white gold, which was patented in Germany in 1912, was first used for jewelry since the mid-1910s to circumvent the restrictions on platinum imposed during the first world war, which began July 1914 and ended November 1918.
