About the Item

A collectible, one-of-a-kind, handmade cabochon emerald and 18 karat gold fringe necklace, by Charles de Temple, 1973, United Kingdom. The collar has a 15" interior circumference. Signed CdeT, London 18k assay marks, 1973 date letter. Each link is stamped with assay marks, numbered 1 - 17. This unique, collector-worthy, yellow gold Charles de Temple neck collar has a series of fringes, at whose center sit three cabochon emeralds weighing a total of 6 carats. The cabochon gemstones are set in a highly textured, wave pattern, 18 karat gold, a characteristic of jewelry made in the 1970s. The hinged gold elements intertwine and flow, creating an elegant and fluid composition, hinting at ancient Greece but containing thoroughly modernist wave and flow gold work. The necklace is designed to lay gracefully against the neck, accentuating the neckline and adding sophistication to any ensemble. Like all jewelry created by Charles de Temple, this necklace is a one-of-a-kind neckpiece and highly collectible. De Temple was a sculptor and jewelry designer. Reputedly the illegitimate son of famed silent Western movie star Tom Mix, he was most likely born in the Sells-Floto traveling circus. He ran away as an adolescent, learning jewelry design, gold smithing, and sculpting along his travels. After a brief career as an actor in the late 1950s and early 1960s, de Temple began to sculpt and then make fine and stylish jewelry in London. He created the golden finger depicted onscreen and used as a promotional object for James Bond movie Goldfinger as well as jewels for other Bond films. A ring by him resides in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
