About the Item

A short but sumptuous necklace , made from poured glass larger rubies and emeralds, with small rubies, emeralds and pearls interspersed in between, with smaller glass beads dangling and highlghting. Wearable and highly collectable, this beautiful necklace was made by Maison Gripoix for Chanel in the 1960s. This necklace is unsigned. A similar necklace is illustrated on page 229 of 'Jewels of Fantasy:Costume Jewellery of the 20th Century', the book published to coincide with the celebrated exhibition. An illustration of that page is found in the images below. Not much needs to be said about Coco Chanel, so famous and successful a designer is she! The oldest and probably the most well known workshop of bijoux de haute couture, Maison Gripoix has endured for four generations of the family , their most famous collaborator and customer being Coco Chanel, who started working with Suzanne Gripoix in the 1920s , continuing through until 1969. Known for their technique of imitating mother of pearl, and creating iconic creations in nacre and poured glass, delicate metal and glass flowers being a signature model, as well as the famous ‘lily of the valley’ brooch for Christian Dior. Working with Lanvin, Poiret at the beginning through to Chanel , Dior and many of the 1950s couturiers, Yves Saint Laurent and again to Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs in more recent times.
