Rare Victorian Holbeinesque Gem Set Enamel Gold Pendant Locket Necklace

About the Item

This rare antique Victorian necklace with a highly ornate locket pendant is of European provenance, crafted in solid 18K yellow gold. It weighs approx. 65.5 grams and measures 16.5" long. The bejeweled, lozenge-shaped locket pendant with artfully scalloped perimeter measures 2 1/2" long and 1.7" wide. Inspired by the 1870's Halbeinesque style (The German designer Hans Halbein who created the most valuable locket pendants for royal families in Europe) this immaculately decorated pendant exhibits artistic gold relief profiles of naturalistic design on an artfully enameled surface. A central décor on the pendant exposes square-cut & pear-shaped emeralds cumulatively weighing approx. 2.23 ct, ruby cabochons and pear & round-faceted rubies cumulatively weighing approx. 2.75 ct, antique-cut diamonds cumulatively weighing approx. 0.45 ct, graded I color, and VS clarity, while the border of the locket pendant is adorned with 8 delicate and lustrous natural pearls. The locket pendant is complemented by 3 lustrous pearls, adorning the duo of ovular gold rings which adjoin the locket pendant to the necklace. The latter incorporates artistically designed and enameled openwork profiles exposing botanic motif and geometric designs. The enameled links are adjoined by means of ovular ringlets. The immaculately hinged locket pendant provides space on both sides for two photographs or any other memento of sentimental value. This unique, quintessentially Victorian necklace of European craftsmanship secures with a hook and a ring and remains in excellent condition.
