Georgian Pinchbeck Chain English 41" English

About the Item

This is a rare 41" original Pinchbeck chain from England. It was created near 1820 and is in excellent condition, with no damaged links, stains, or damage of any kind. The original clasp functions perfectly. It's a thick, sturdy chain that looks just like buttery 18K yellow gold. "Pinchbeck" is the term used to describe the gold-like (but not gold) metal invented by 18th-century clockmaker-slash-Mad Scientist, Christopher Pinchbeck, who invented an alloy that looked, felt, and behaved like gold but was in fact mostly copper and zinc and maybe something else. I purchased this 41" pinchbeck chain about a decade ago from a clockmaker's daughter and collector of historical jewelry. I had never heard of Pinchbeck until she educated me. What I love about it is that it does, in fact, pass for gold. It's been over 100 years and it still hasn't tarnished. Of course, the clip which is inserted into the barrel closure has darkened with time and use. But the clasp is still every bit as strong as it was when it was created. This is a very sturdy necklace. It is sturdy physically, yes, but it has a sturdy beauty that has endured. The round links have a stippled texture that has been worn smooth in places over time, as one would expect with a necklace of this age. But it's entirely original and has not been bastardized with a later clasp, so that's quite exciting. Pinchbeck jewelry was somewhat popular following its invention in the late 1700s. People who might otherwise not be in a position to comfortably afford 18k yellow gold jewelry could now purchase beautifully crafted pieces made from this novel Pinchbeck alloy that looked like rich 18k gold. And wealthy people certainly traveled with pinchbeck chains instead of their good gold chains, just like Princess Diana was not above wearing "costume" jewelry when she traveled. Pinchbeck is rare. It's rarer than gold. This "cheap" substitute for the real thing has become a real thing in its own right. And rightfully so. This is a bold, unique necklace in excellent condition. A true find.

An absolutely stunning, highly translucent white nephrite jade (mutton fat) hand-carved pendant. The 89.71 x 54.77mm pendant has been carved by a master lapidary artist to depict a folding paper fan. It's a wonderful and original idea; I've never seen another carving quite like it. And the white nephrite jade is so fine, it lends itself perfectly to being rendered as a fan; the high translucence makes the fan glow endlessly. The surface of the nephrite has almost a pearly sheen. The fan features a simple silver bail and 24" silver chain. This striking, luminous carved-from-the-moon fan...

This classic 19" pearl necklace is composed of 50 cultured freshwater pearls from China that range in size from 8.5mm to 10mm, with most being 9mm or larger. The pearls have been hand-strung on thick, sturdy white silk and knotted between each pearl. Instead of being strung from smallest to largest, the pearls were selected at random. This has the effect of creating a necklace that appears uniform in size overall. It is finished with a rhodium-plated silver clasp. The pearls are round to near-round and have thick, luxurious nacre. Chinese freshwater pearls now rival Japanese cultured Akoya pearls...
