Suffragette Amethyst and Enamel Necklace

About the Item

A suffragette amethyst and enamel necklace, consisting of eleven oval faceted amethysts graduating from the centre, connected with ten figure-of-eight white and green links, and suspended by a gold trace chain, the amethysts estimated to weigh 10.5 carats in total, all mounted in gold, circa 1910, measuring approximately 38.5 x 0.7cm, gross weight 12 grams. This necklace is in very good condition and minimal enamel defiant. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold on 14ct gold chain. This special necklace comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. This necklace was made in around 1910, during the movement for women’s suffrage in Britain. The colours of green, white and violet became the colours to symbolise the Women’s Social and Political Union, which led the movement on women’s suffrage. The green symbolised hope, the white symbolised purity and the violet symbolised dignity. The initials of the colours were also used to spell “Give Women the Vote”: green, white, and violet. Suffragette jewellery became a way for suffragettes to identify each other and unify. It became so popular that jewellery house Mappin & Webb issued a page in their catalogue of suffragette jewellery in 1908. This delicate necklace features wonderful enamel work and lovely bright amethysts and is a wonderful piece of history.
