Vassort Vintage Colombian Emerald Diamond Bib Necklace
About the Item
Many different types of necklaces have withstood the test of time, remaining popular throughout history and still prevalent today. The bib necklace is one form seen in Ancient Egyptian paintings of pharaohs, revived in the 20th century, inspired by the Egyptian archaeological discoveries at the Valley of the Kings. This splendid Vassort Vintage Colombian Emerald Diamond Bib Necklace, made in France in the late 20th century, circa 1980s, by the famous French jeweler André Vassort, features an octagonal emerald weighing an estimated 13.20 carats. The emerald is accompanied by report no. 105573, dated 11 March 2019, from the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF), stating that it is a green natural beryl-type emerald of medium intense color saturation and Colombian origin with moderate clarity enhancement.
Bib necklaces are similar to collar necklaces in that they are short, generally 12 to 14 inches (30.48 to 35.56 cm) of precious metal that sits high up on the collarbone. However, a bib necklace is wider at the front and tapered at the back around the neck, made from rows of gemstones. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, this sparkling example features two rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds that taper toward the back, held apart by 22 graduated marquise-cut diamonds in prong settings, oriented vertically, including one that adorns the hidden push clasp. At the focal point of the necklace, sixteen sparkling round diamonds accent the featured octagonal step-cut emerald in a round halo. Within the halo, four larger rounds are placed at cardinal points, creating a subtle yet dynamic fanfare.
Colombian emeralds are said to have a warmer and more intense pure green color. Along with their rarity, Colombian emeralds have a special historical appeal, like Burmese rubies and sapphires from Kashmir. There is a lot of myth around their origin, which makes them more desirable. It is common for emeralds to be clarity-enhanced like this featured stone, as most emeralds contain surface-reaching features due to their natural growth conditions and recovery methods.
From 1955 to the early 1990s, André Vassort was one of the most sought-after manufacturers of high-quality French jewelry, creating jewels for the top Maisons, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Mauboussin, and more. He specialized in working with yellow gold, drawing out warmth from the metal as in this piece, and a full range of gemstones. Most of his jewelry is unmarked and unknown, save for pieces like this, where his mark appears alongside the signature of one of his famous clients and occasionally on its own. The mark of André Vassort is a mark of quality craftsmanship and fine jewelry. A matching bracelet is available and sold separately at the time of this writing.
