Pique, the technique of inlaying gold and silver into tortoise shell or ivory, came to England in the 17th century with the French Huguenots. This piece is dated,
c. 1860 when fine pique was popular. The intersection of the cross has been artfully stabilized by applique of the smaller gold cross on the reverse.
