Victorian Antique Diamond Floral Fringe Tiara Necklace Circa 1890s

About the Item

A stunning antique diamond tiara convertible to a necklace, c.1880s, the tiara designed as a relatively compact fringe which almost gives the impression of a bandeau style tiara, it has a tapering form and is composed of nine knife edge bars each surmounted with a six-petalled star-shaped flower motif set with old cut diamonds and applied with three further diamonds down the spine, these are interspersed with shorter bars of four diamonds, the top and third in collet settings, the second in a tulip shape mount and the last in a square collet, to each end are five further diamond-set fringe bars, all set in silver to a gold tiara frame. When removed from the frame and joined to the diamond set back chain, the tiara transforms into a wonderful statement necklace. The fringe tiara is a classic of the Victorian period and this is a lovely wearable example, its convertible nature making it a versatile and useful jewel. The flowers resemble the beautiful small white star-like flowers of the orange blossom tree. Queen Victoria wore a wreath of orange blossom for her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840 in lieu of a tiara or anything grander. This was possibly to honour one of the first gifts the Prince had given her after their engagement, a gold and porcelain brooch in the form of a sprig of orange blossom, a flower traditionally associated with betrothal. A few years later, the Prince commissioned a gold and enamel orange blossom headdress for the Queen on their anniversary – a wonderfully romantic and permanent reminder of her wedding wreath. This tiara is comfortable to wear as it is relatively light and would make a wonderful ‘something old’ for any bride.
