39 Carat Carved Amethyst Pendant in 18K Gold on Convertible Amethyst Bead Chain
About the Item
This graceful carved amethyst teardrop is part of a trio of amethyst drops purchased by Eytan Brandes at a trade show several years ago. Opting to break up the set, Eytan made the two smaller drops into dressy earrings accented with diamonds. (You can find them on Dibs, if they're still available.)
This larger stone has been made into a more casual, but bold and dramatic pendant with a hand-crafted 18 karat yellow gold frame. Because it looks great as both a choker and as a fob, we made a chain with an adjustor link so that the pendant can both worn either way.
The amethyst is just under 40 carats and is carved in tiers. Amethyst frequently looks like little more than purple glass, but that crystal clarity and undifferentiated saturation become harder to find without some human intervention as the stone gets bigger. This amethyst has been left alone, so it shows some inclusions and a more natural amethyst color instead of the purple-on-steroids of commercial (treated) amethyst. (Rest assured there are no surface-reaching cracks or fissures.).
The frame holds the stone in place with three prongs in the front and four in the back. Eytan made the frame specifically for this stone, crafting the mold in wax then finishing the gold casting by hand to give it a naturalistic, "twiggy" appearance. The oversized top loop and all of the chain hardware were made in the shop by Eytan from hand-pulled and hand-textured wire of recycled 18 karat gold.
The chain is a long strand of natural amethyst, fully knotted with dark purple silk thread. To match the look of the pendant, we chose beautiful, untreated beads with varying color tones and a slightly waxy polish.
The closure is a hook and eye at the ends, plus a second "eye" link placed at choker (16") length. (The long excess hangs down the back.) When worn at the longer length, the adjustor eye loop will be visible, but it looks cool because it's the same interesting, crinkly texture as the pendant, and could even be used to host a small clip-on charm.

It's an earth-mined, natural and untreated stone weighing 0.04 carats -- a small but high quality sparkler (Eytan rates it G-H color and VS2 clarity). The hand-wrought pulled wire bale is roughly oval-shaped and oversized, since Eytan envisioned his pendant would be paired with beads (which generally require a bigger bale than a chain), but removable.
