Ancient Greek 4th Century BC Silver Owl Coin 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
A standing owl with wings outstretched is depicted on an authentic 4th century BC silver "siglos" coin from the ancient Greek colony of Amisos in the Pontos region on the shores of the Black Sea, near what is now the modern town of Samsun in Northern Turkey. The opposite side of the coin depicts Hera, the Greek goddess of women and marriage, and the wife of Zeus. The owl was a symbol of Athena, virgin goddess of wisdom. This coin is set in a Steven Battelle designed matte-finish artisinally crafted 18K gold setting decorated with large and smaller "jawan" granulation. The handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be added additionally. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. This pendant is sent with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. Classic!

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
