Antique Micromosaic “Pelican in Her Piety” Pendant in 14K Gold, circa 1830s
This exquisite pendant is a remarkable marriage of historic devotion and fine artistry. Originally an antique paperweight, this micromosaic medallion has been reimagined as a wearable work of art. The central image—known as “The Pelican in Her Piety”—symbolizes self-sacrifice and nurturing love, long revered as a Christian emblem.
Dating to the 1830s, the micromosaic is composed of meticulously hand-set glass tesserae, depicting a mother pelican piercing her breast to feed her young—a powerful icon of maternal devotion and spiritual grace. The tesserae are arranged with extraordinary precision, capturing both detail and texture in miniature.
We’ve mounted this rare micromosaic in a bespoke 14k gold setting to honor and preserve its legacy. The pendant measures 1.25 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 1 inch across. It weighs 9.81 grams and remains in excellent antique condition.
