About the Item

A large and striking sautoir necklace, with a full and graduated pendant, with baroque pearls of assorted sizes, in steel grey and cream, with darkened chain. It is attributed to Louis Rousselet from Paris, by the quality and colour way of its pearls and its means of construction. Louis Rousselet [Paris 1892-1980) was the head of one of the most important pearl manufacturing workshops during the 20th century. He was apprenticed as a glass bead blower at 8 years old and continued to work until 1975. From 1922 until 1935 he made necklaces of Galalith beads, in the Art Deco style, and between 1945 and 1975, he supplied jewellery for Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath, Jean Patou, Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. He also created many dramatic adornments for Josephine Baker, Mistinguett and other stars of the celebrated Folies Bergeres. Rousselet jewellery is highly regarded, and very recognisable, with a very distinctive and delicate style and manufacture of its own.
