About the Item

The pendant is set with cabochon amethyst, round-cut topaz, and square-cut rhodolite garnet in textured and hammered 18-karat gold. It drops from a hammered and textured collar The collar is 15.5" long, and the removable pendant is 1.35" x 1.51". Maker’s mark. Made by prominent American modernist studio jeweler Ed Wiener circa 1970. The necklace combines ancient and contemporary design into a pleasingly unique formal beauty. Despite the richness of the gold and stones used, the necklace design remains smaller scale, making it appear more modern. It is in excellent condition and can be worn with or without the pendant. It comes with its original signed box. Ed Wiener’s career spanned four decades between the late 1940s and 1980s. He was one of the most important American studio jewelers of his time. Beginning his career in New York City’s Greenwich Village and Provincetown, Rhode Island, in the 1940s, Wiener was part of the artistic and jeweler community, including Art Smith and Sam Kramer, that questioned traditional jewelry aesthetics. He was self-taught, making his first jewels with carpenter’s tools. Weiner’s early jewels were Calder-esque, hand-tooled in silver, minimal, and bold. They favored abstract forms and semi-precious stones. By the late 1950s, however, he had also turned to working with gold and precious stones. His travels led him to the gem cutters in Jaipur and a fascination with Byzantine jewelry. You can see the origins of this particular, supremely elegant necklace, made during Weiner’s Madison Avenue years, in those fascinations and the resurgence of yellow gold and stones such as amethyst in the 1970s. Weiner was a modernist yet always looking at history, the present, and yes, even the post-modern. Wiener’s designs were celebrated as reflecting the broader modernist art movements. Over his career, he helped elevate studio jewelry, influencing subsequent generations of jewelers with his diverse styles and artistic vision.
