About the Item

An authentic Roman silver coin from 148 BC, depicting the Goddess Roma, has been set in this 18 kt gold pendant. On the reverse of the coin, we see the Dioscuri. In ancient Roman religion, the Goddess Roma was a female deity of remarkable beauty who personified the city of Rome and, more broadly, the Roman state. Roman political and religious ideals were represented through the image of Roma in various forms—coins, sculptures, and architectural motifs. Although her representations were influenced by other goddesses of the time (particularly Athena), the Goddess Roma emerged as a distinct and powerful symbol of Rome. As an archetype, she represents a model for rational women—those guided by both intellect and emotion, capable of maintaining composure in difficult or emergency situations. Such women develop strategic responses and act with determination, often associated with traditionally masculine strength. This archetype empowers women to remain in control, evaluate consequences, and adapt actions when needed to achieve effective outcomes. In Roman art and coinage, Roma was often portrayed wearing a helmet and other military attributes, symbolizing her martial and protective nature. Notably, her cult was served by an exclusively male priesthood.

An interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L. Papius, who was probably from Lanuvium, which was about 19 miles outside of Rome. The reverse side of the coin displays...
