Late Victorian Diamond and Onyx Mourning Locket Pendant
About the Item
A beautiful Late Victorian diamond and onyx mourning locket pendant. On top, the locket pendant is decorated with a silver flower and leaves which are adorned with rose cut diamonds. The locket pendant dates from the late Victorian period, circa 1880-1890. The onyx pendant is oval-shaped and is being held by a 14 karat gold bail. The onyx is intact and all nine rose cut diamonds are original and present. The pendant can be opened and is used very little and its glass cover closes well. Behind the glass usually a keepsake of a loved one is being placed.
Onyx jewelry were mostly worn in The Grand Victorian Era, between ca. 1861-1880. Saddens by the death of the Queen’s husband, Prince Albert, mourning became an art for the Victorians. Who designed black clothes and jewelry to be worn in the months following the death of a relatives. This mourning tradition was adopted in several countries, as well in the Netherlands.
The pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. Marked and tested as 14 karat gold. The length of the pendant is 44 mm and weighs 13.5 grams.
