About the Item

This is a stunning antique Edwardian - Art Deco Peridot and Pink Tourmaline and Pearl Lavaliere Pendant Necklace in 15 Karat Gold. The gorgeous and full of symbolism jewel has a heart, a forget-me-not flower and a bow motif and the pendant wears the colors of the women's Suffragette movement to win the right to vote. The pendant dates to the period of the movement prior to World War I. The stunning jewel has a central rectangular faceted Peridot of approximately 1.2 Carats. The vivid green of the peridot is captivating. The lavaliere has a knife edge surround that is set with two round peridot gems and two fine Pink Tourmaline gems. These gems are absolutely radiant. All the gems are set a jour (open backed) in order to let the maximum amount of light through and enhance the radiant sparkle of the gems. The color combination of the pink-purple Tourmalines and the green Peridot is truly magical. The design of the surround has a heart in a bow motif at the top and a forget-me-not flower and leaf motif at the base. The pendant is set throughout with symbolism including the heart for love and devotion at the top, the colors of the Suffragette movement and the Forget-me-not flower at the bottom for remembrance and eternal love. The jewels are set in 15 Karat Gold. This original Victorian/Edwardian - Art Deco pendant dates to circa 1900-1910. Peridot was also King Edward's favorite gem and thus a favorite during the Edwardian period. Suffrage or Suffragette jewelry refers to jewelry worn by suffragists in the years immediately preceding the First World War. Its primary purpose was to demonstrate its wearer's allegiance to the cause of women's suffrage. Jewelry was a key mechanism used by suffragists to identify themselves. The suffragettes, in particular, successfully embraced the language of contemporary fashion - including its emphasis on delicate femininity - as a strategy for increasing the popular appeal of their movement and dodging the stereotype of the 'masculine' women's rights campaigner. As fashion lecturer Cally Blackman notes, "Membership numbers grew, and it became fashionable to identify with the struggle for the vote, even if only by wearing a small piece of jewellery picked out in semi-precious coloured stones or enamel." As scholar Elizabeth Goring notes, the purple-white-green color combination was deeply symbolic of the Suffragette Movement and the use of these colors "offered a powerful means by which suffragettes could publicly advertise their identity," and would not be construed as merely decorative by others The pendant is 1 3/8 inches (35mm) tall including the bales and is 28mm tall without the bales. The pendant is 21mm wide. The central rectangular faceted peridot is approximately 1.2 Carats and is 7mm by 5mm by 4mm. The pendant is hallmarked 15K for 15 Karat Gold. The pendant weighs 3 grams.
