"Sprig" Yellow Gold Pendant and Necklace with Akoya Pearls

About the Item

Eytan Brandes converted this 1970s pearl spray brooch to a pendant. As a pin, it demurely announced "I'm to be worn on a cashmere sweater or perhaps a lightweight evening jacket" and it was not particularly interesting. Worn as a large, branchy pendant on a choker length chain, however, it's sexy as all get-out. Pearls are timeless for a reason. They can be unobjectionable and boring (the inevitable curse of the wardrobe staple) but they endure because they're beautiful and endlessly adaptable. Pearls are also, unfortunately, endlessly confusing, so before Eytan started snipping, we showed this brooch to our pearl guy, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls in downtown Los Angeles. George has spent his entire working life in the world of saltwater cultured pearls; he deals only in Japanese akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls -- no freshwater and no Chinese any-water -- and he confirmed these are genuine high-quality Japanese akoya cultured pearls. He classified the color as white with cream and pink overtones. He also helped us pick comparable akoya pearls for our planned necklace from his vast inventory. We went with slightly larger pearls (5mm as opposed to the 4.5mm-4.8mm pearls on the pendant) but as you can see from the photos, they match perfectly. The pendant is set with nineteen pearls and is made of 14 karat yellow gold. There are no any maker's marks but the purity mark -- "K14" suggests European manufacture. Eytan fashioned the tidy half-round bale from the pin hardware, and the bale is large enough to accommodate most chains; it's removable from the pearl necklace, so you can mix and match. The pearl strand is 15.5" long. The pearls are individually knotted and, to give the necklace a more contemporary look, the silk thread we used is golden yellow. The closure is a traditional 14 karat pearl clasp. As with all of our pendants, we're pretty flexible when it comes to our chains. If you'd like a different length of pearls, a different kind of chain altogether, or no chain at all, just let us know and we'll give you adjusted pricing and options.
