About the Item
Handcrafted Steven Battelle Ancient Greek Artemis Coin in complementary 22K Gold Setting.
The ancient motif of the coin has been carefully extended into the mount of the setting.
The coin is a tetradrachm from Macedon under Rome, 158-150 BC, and features a diademed and draped bust of Artemis with bow and quiver over her left shoulder, all within central medallion of a Macedonian shield. The reverse is a club with monogram above, all in oak wreath.
Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities, and her temple at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Artemis' symbols included a bow and arrow, a quiver, and hunting knives, and the deer and the cypress were sacred to her. Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the patron and protector of young girls and was worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
