About the Item

This cameo was originally a brooch/pendant -- one of many Eytan accumulated in his shop over the years. Carved from cornelian shell, we're pretty sure the subject is a Bacchante -- a female follower of the Roman god of wine and general good times, Bacchus. In other words, she's a stone cold party girl. The grapes near her shoulder are the tipoff, but she could, in fact, just be a gal who likes to wear grapes on her shoulder. It can be difficult to date cameos because the art of creating them by hand hasn't changed much over the past few hundred years and many of the subjects (Bacchantes, Persephone, Flora, Achilles, etc.) are perennial, but in this particular case, we lucked out because the catch on the pin was a type only used from around 1890 to 1930, so this cameo is between 90 and 130 years old. Eytan gave Miss Good Times a big makeover. We found these sparkly 2.5mm green tourmaline beads in early 2023 and bought the dealer's entire stock because we loved the color so much. Green tourmaline beads, like most beads, are generally cut from lower-grade material and can show a lot of brown and grey, but we love the intense dark green of these beads, and we especially love this shade of green against the pale coral of our cameo. A tiny hole at the bottom of the cameo's frame indicates this cameo had a bead border -- probably seed pearls strung on wire. At some point, the wire broke and the seed pearls fell all over someone's floor (I'm sure they're still turning up to this very day) and the wire was removed. But honoring that original intention, Eytan gave the pendant a new wire border strung with our vivid green beads. The pendant weighs 9.9 grams and is 50mm long, including the top loop and 35mm wide. (That's approximately 2" long and 1-3/8" wide). The cameo is 35mm x 27mm (1-3/8" x 1"). The accompanying 16" (choker length) two-strand bead necklace is removable for mixing and matching. It has a gold-filled pearl clasp, and all components are new. With the beaded chain, this necklace weighs 15.8 grams.
