Victorian Fanciful Tortoise Shell Cross
About the Item
Amazing, think of it, how this tortoise shell cross is carved with circles cut away and even the loop cut out with a crack. The cross has survived and reaches us in excellent condition. There are no dibs or bites. Just a lovely form, buttery soft tortoise shell from an era where tortoise was not an endangered species. The shell of a Hawksbill tortoise was used as carefully as if it were a precious gem. Remember, workmanship was as important to the Victorians as were gemstones.
