Victorian Fly Brooch & Pendant with Diamonds Opals & Sapphires

About

"I heard a fly buzz when I died; The stillness round my form Was like the stillness in the air Between the heaves of storm" -Emily Dickinson This resplendent, whimsical and oh-so-rare French Victorian en tremblant brooch in silver-over-gold celebrates nature in the form of a charismatic fly with sapphire eyes, diamond-encrusted wings and a body set with two fine-quality Australian crystal opals. The crystal opals display flashes of blue, green, orange and red and have absolutely no crazing. The two sapphire eyes are natural and a royal blue. Both the head of the fly and its wings are created in the French "en tremblant" fashion, meaning they "tremble" or move when worn, bringing the brooch or pendant to life. The smaller of the two opals measures just under 5 mm while the larger one is approximately 9.6 mm x 7.79. The little sapphire eyes are 3.4 mm each. The old-cut diamonds are tiny but eighty-five of them cover the body and wings and sparkle away in their silver mountings. All are secure; no stones are missing. While perfectly functional as a brooch, with all mechanical pieces in tight working order, this diamond-encrusted Musca Domestica of the suborder Cyclorrhapha also makes an excellent necklace. To that end, the fly ships with an eccentric, one-of-a-kind 17.5" hand-fabricated sterling silver chain with a blackened oxidized finish that coordinates perfectly with the oxidized silver wings of our insect friend. The necklace features a bail that is set with a natural Ceylon sapphire measuring approximately 6 mm x 5 mm and weighing approximately .75 carats. The blue of the cabochon sapphire is an excellent color match for the eyes of the fly. The choker-length necklace instantly updates and coolifies this Victorian treasure. The chain alone weighs 33.26 grams and the fly on its own tips the scales at 7.38 grams. Whimsical, glittering and rare, this fun and beautiful gem from the late Victorian era will be perfectly at home on the most modern lapel or neck. It's just ever so slightly eccentric which makes it perfect for a conservative work environment.
