Antique Coromandel Game Box, Hand Carved Chess, Backgammon, Checkers, Horse Race

About the Item

One of the finest game boxes we've had the pleasure of offering, classic Regency Style, the case beautifully constructed of rare, dramatically figured Coromandel wood, lift top with front panel doors opening to reveal a hand carved chess set of cream and light red mounted on brass spires. There is a four part luxurious hand tooled, gilded embossed leather game board for chess, backgammon and Horse Race/Steeplechase. A central compartment behind the chess set is fitted with two lifting trays, one for cards with some of the original tooled leather gaming boards and the other with hand turned cream and light red backgammon pieces, domino pieces, dice, a cribbage board Coromandel wood is highly prized for its rich color, high density and beautiful figure. It was one of the most expensive, luxurious, exotic and choice woods for boxes in the 19th century. A figured pattern of the Ebony wood family, it was sources from South East Asia and India and became virtually extinct by the late 19th century. An antique board game for Horse Race/Steeplechase is a rare find. The Steeple Chase horse race is believed to have been first recorded at the Library of the Dromoland Castle, Ireland, a type of racing run from one Church Steeple to another, hence the name, in the eighteenth century. The Horse Race board game was one of the first illustrated racing games together with The Game of Human Life, circa 1790, and The Game of Goose. Four horses race around the board on the roll of the dice to the finish line. Great condition commensurate with age, light wear to the leather, colors and gilding are very good, backgammon/checkers pieces with a few expansion seams and very minor nicks, the chess set is in outstanding condition. 30 Backgammon pieces, 24 of which may be used for checkers - both complete sets 32 chess pieces 24 Domino pieces 2 dice cribbage board The Steeple Chase board is 26.5cm wide by 62cm, the chess/checkers and backgammon boards are on the other side, each measure 26.5cm by 31cm
