About the Item

This exquisite antique Dutch silver box is a fine example of 19th-century European silversmithing, showcasing both elegance in design and historical significance. Crafted in the Netherlands, the box features a graceful oval form with intricate hand-engraved detailing on the lid and bottom. A central cartouche, left blank, sits surrounded by ornate floral scrollwork and delicate decorative motifs, all meticulously engraved with fine precision. Measuring approximately 59 mm in width and 43 mm in depth, the box opens to reveal a smooth, polished interior. The piece is fully hallmarked with official Dutch silver marks, including the lion passant facing right with the number "2" beneath it, indicating second standard silver (.835 purity), as well as the Minerva head mark used to denote Dutch regional assay offices. These hallmarks confirm its origin and authenticity and help place the box in the 19th-century period. The box closes with a secure hinged lid and thumb-lift tab, and is in beautifully preserved condition with only gentle signs of age, consistent with its era. This charming piece could once have served as a snuff box, pill box, or vanity container, and today it remains a timeless collectible. Whether displayed in a curated silver collection or used as a personal keepsake, it is a piece rich in history and elegance.
