About the Item

A Georgian gold, enamel and agate needle case or etui, comprising a needle case in polished grey agate, with an inscription in white enamel, with floral detailing in 18 karat yellow gold. This striking Georgian etui is truly beautiful to behold made even more special by the fact that it is still presented in its original shagreen fitted case, with red velvet lining. This elegant etui would originally have been used to hold gold needles, in the Georgian period, circa 1760. A similar piece is held by the Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 9347 (owned by the British Royal family). The tapering needle case is formed from a polished piece of grey, mottled agate, exhibiting beautiful swirling striations and elegant variations of grey. The needle case is mounted with graceful, pierced gold decoration, adorned with scrolls and floral motifs. A band, ornamented in white enamel, is inscribed “J’aime mon choix” in French, which roughly translates to “I love my choice”. During this period, people of a high standing in society would speak French, such was the fashion at the time, and this would have belonged to a lady of high class. The lid of the needle case pulls apart from the bottom, revealing the gold-rimmed storage compartment inside. The enamelling is in good condition, and the overall condition of the etui is wonderful. One hook fastening from the case is missing. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The etui measures 10.7cm long and 17mm wide. Gross weight: 29.97g Hallmarks: none, tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1760 Your etui will be placed in its original black shagreen box, with red velvet lining.
