Antique Russian Samorodok Silver, Gold and Diamond Cigarette Case
About the Item
This fine and exquisite Imperial Russian 'Samorodok' silver gilt and gemstone cigarette case is dated circa 1908-1917 and it was made in St. Petersburg. The body is richly decorated with various cabochon stones, including sapphires, rubies, old cut diamonds and chrysoberyls.
The front of the case ends with the high carat rose gold thumb piece mounted with finely set sapphire cabochon. The cigarette case has a silver monogram on the back which part of it is missing. The interior of the case is made in silver gilt. Marked inside with 84 Kokoshnik, mark St-Petersburg, year 1908-1917, work master's initials in Cyrillic пв (PV). Rare and very fine piece of antique Russian silver perfect for those looking to add a real treasure to their collection.
The samorodok technique produces a textured nugget like effect simulating a molten surface. This result is obtained by heating gold or silver to a temperature near the melting point and cooling it abruptly in water. The process was popular in Russia and it was used by world knows silversmiths as Fabergé.
