About the Item

A Guilloché (in English usually "Guilloche") is an engraving technique in which a very precise, intricate pattern is mechannically etched in an underlying material with very fine detail. Most commonly, the Guilloche surface is then enameled and the repetitive, intricate design shows through the colorful enamel. An absolutely stunning pair of Guilloché opera binoculars from the Victorian era (ca1880)! This beautiful French-made piece is crafted in brass and has a folding lorgnette handle and incredible mother of pearl trim throughout. The piece features two round fields of view with a twistable focus knob at the center, allowing one to easily adjust the magnification. The surface of both the handle and body are decorated with blueish silver enameling atop a fabulous wavy Guilloché pattern, adding wonderful depth to the piece. A hand-painted pink and white floral design embellishes the enameling, leaving a lovely, colorful trail that wraps around both surfaces. The floral image is covered in a clear enamel and pairs beautifully with the wavy Guilloché design and brass setting. Incredible mother of pearl details the eye cups, focus wheel, central rivet, and the tip of the handle, exhibiting shimmery white color with soft, iridescent hues of pale pink and green that are visible when turned in the light. A removable handle rests at the side, with the ability to be unscrewed from the binoculars, if desired. Stamped near the focus wheel is the Colmont of Paris hallmark of a "C" inside of a six-pointed star. It's a gorgeous and fantastic statement piece that would make a wonderful addition to any collection! The binoculars measure approximately 3 1/2" wide (when folded, it measures about 4 1/2" wide), 1" tall and 1 5/8" deep. The handle measures approximately 4 1/2" long and 1/2" in diameter (the removable piece measures 3 1/2" long). The overall condition of the binoculars is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the brass setting or to the enameled work. The mother of pearl is intact and securely set. The focus knob and removable handle are secure and in good working condition.
