Antique Cameo Portrait Profile of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) Shell

About the Item

This oval cameo was carved in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century out of a two layered shell. It shows a profile bust of the great German poet and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe loved Italy and spent much time there. One of his famous books is his 'Italienische Reise' - Italian Journey. Goethe loved Naples, his words 'to see Naples and die' express the love he held for this region which was also the centre of cameo carving in Italy. Most likely this cameo was one of a series of commemorative cameos.
