About the Item

Exceptionally rare antique Russian Icon of Saint Tryphon, the Patron Saint of wine growers, restauranteurs, falconers. Saint Tryphon's saint day is February 14th, according to the Old Calendar, which is the time for wine growers to prune their grape vines for an abundant harvest in the fall. This day became a wine festival celebrated with much drinking to toast the upcoming growing season, particularly in Greece, Macedonia and the surrounding Balkan Countries where wine is an important source of income. By extension, Saint Tryphon also came to be revered as the Patron Saint of restauranteurs and bar keepers. A Russian legend relating to Saint Tryphon is that Tsar Ivan the Terrible had a falconer named Tryphon who, while hunting one day, allowed the Tsar's prized falcon to escape. The Tsar flew into a fury and decreed that if the Falconer Tryphon did not return with the Tsar's falcon in three day's time, he would loose his life. The falconer searched for two days without rest to no avail. Exhausted, he prayed to his namesake Saint and fell asleep under a tree. He dreamt of a young man on a white horse holding a falcon on his hand, telling him to bring the falcon to the Tsar. When he awoke, he found the falcon in the tree above him and returned it to the Tsar, his life saved. The image here is the traditional Russian depiction of Saint Tryphon, on a beautiful white horse holding a falcon on this hand. The Saint is pictured wearing a green tunic with a red cape with gold highlights, riding in a bucolic landscape with a golden sky. Jesus looks upon him from the clouds at the upper center of the icon. The Saint is identified in old Cyrillic. A golden brass oklad, finely chased accompanies the icon. Excellent condition, tempera and gold leaf on linden wood panel First half of 19th Century Very rare subject

Rare Etruscan Revival 18K Gold Locket Necklace attr. Eugene Fontenay, Paris 1870
By Eugene Fontenay
Located in New York, NY
Large, stunning granulated antique French Etruscan Revival locket with the original, equally spectacular large chain. The oval locket exquisitely decorated with a technique known as granulation, where a tiny gold bead is individually applied to a surface to form a geometric pattern. Done entirely by hand and requiring a master goldsmith, this technique is thought to have originated in Sumer approximately 5000 years ago. The Etruscans mastered the process in the first millennium B.C and closely guarded its secret, becoming celebrated for creating some of the most beautiful and technically advanced gold jewelry ever made. Condition: This piece is in very good condition retaining the original interior crystal, the hinges work very well and are precisely calibrated to stay open in place when desired. The back of the locket shows normal wear with just the slightest waviness. The chain is in excellent condition. Composed as a pendant locket on its original chain, the oval gold links reeded on the interior and applied chain link on the exterior, the oval locket decorated with twisted wirework circles and fine applied granulation patterns, suspended from a long bale with quatrefoil granulation. Hinged on the side, opening to reveal a hinged glass panel for a personal memento. French assay mark and maker's mark partially obscured Confident attribution to Fontenay based on partial hallmark and similar published examples. References: Wartski for gold enamelled locket on chain necklace, sold archives; DSF for gold enamelled locket pendant of similar workmanship and design. Fontenay pieces retaining the original chain which may be worn on its own are rare and desirable. Eugene Fontenay...

Early antique Russian Travelling Icon in bronze, 18th Century or earlier
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is an early Russian orthodox travelling Icon, hand made of bronze, which we date to 18th Century or earlier. The bronze icon is cast with a main rectangular slightly curved shape with a smaller rectangular tab section above. The reverse has a hanging spigot cast into the top tab section. This piece has a mix of colours within the bronze with the high points being worn and shiny from wear and use. This antique bronze icon probably depicts Saint Nicholas as the central image with other figures ( children?) either side of the head, all within a border. There are other details on the icon including letters and numbers towards the top of the main rectangle. The tab section is also decorated. The reverse also carries decoration but is quite worn. Overall an early and very interesting Russian bronze Icon...
