A late Victorian diamond-set tiara
About the Item
A late Victorian diamond-set tiara, the five openwork foliate garland design sections graduating in size from the centre, each featuring three old-European cut diamonds within a pear-shaped diamond-set surround, the bottom section with five curved diamond-set frames to knife-edge bars, each terminating to an old-cut diamond, all above a single row featuring five diamond clusters, the diamonds estimated to weigh a total 11 carats, all set in silver to a yellow gold mount , converting to a necklace with detachable back section set with diamonds estimated to weigh a further total of 0.95 carats, circa 1890, measuring approximately 13 x 5 cm, gross weight 47.9 grams.
This tiara is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as silver and 15ct gold, with silver gild tiara frame.
A splendid late Victorian diamond-set tiara on sale at Bentley and Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. This tiara features beautiful foliate garland decoration- a style that, in jewellery, often included ribbons, bows, scrolls, or floral motifs. Such designs became popular during the period in which this tiara was made and drew inspiration from the decorative arts of the 17th and 18th centuries. Set with old-cut diamonds that sparkle romantically, the tiara’s botanical theme only enhances its feminine elegance. Designed with versatility in mind, the piece can be converted into a glamorous necklace, making it suitable for multiple occasions and effortlessly elevating any formal ensemble.
